ha, you make the X301 tempting again!

But I do worry about the battery -- I'm guessing it's not compatible with X200 series batteries? ie, it'll probably be flaky in about 1.5 years, and then what?

Is the X301 screen nicer than the X201? (not size, but appearance. I also find the X201 to have a strangely large bezel...)

Thanks for helping!

Upon further consideration I don't think it makes sense for me to get a discontinued X301 via the outlet. So now I'm leaning toward an X201. Unless somebody can recommend an altogether different brand? (I wish Lenovo still offered something like the X301; I like the bigger screen -- the X201 screen seems a bit so-so.)

My first choice:
   Intel Core i3-390M Processor (2.66GHz, 3MB L3, 1066MHz FSB)
   Intel Core i5-560M Processor (2.66GHz, 3MB L3, 1066MHz FSB)
   Intel Core i7-620M Processor (2.66GHz, 4MB L3, 1066MHz FSB

Since heat/fan noise is a particular concern, does anybody happen to know how these processors compare in that regard?

I'd say you will have a hard-time finding a thin, i3/i5/i7-based laptop that doesn't generate much heat and doesn't trigger a fan to dissipate it. It's not a coincidence Apple is still using a Core2 Duo on its MacBook Air and 13" MacBookPro. The Core2 Duo (the very same used on the X301) is a much more power-efficient processor than the latest crop of Intel processors.

Most of my computer time comes down to: Web, email/typing, video (watching, and a bit of encoding), processing photographs. I'd enjoy the luxury of a fast new laptop, but not if that makes it hot and noisy.

If so, I'd say the X301 would be a better choice than the X201. At least it's the conclusion I came to when I needed to replace my X60s. I don't mind the X301 is discontinued (after all, it has a 3-year warranty) and I don't mind its processor is "outdated" (as explained, it's more power-efficient than the newer processor). The extra resolution and display size are compelling advantages of the X301 over the X201.

Cheers, Dominique
