I am using an X61T. It has Windows vista.

Whenever I connect a monitor to my laptop, I get two separate desktops  -
one for the laptop screen and one for the monitor. However, what I want is
both monitors to display the same single desktop.

I tried going to display settings in Windows,

You either want to install Thinkvantage Presentation Director or upgrade to Windows 7. In fact, even though Presentation Director is my all-time favorite Thinkpad-specific application, do the latter (which alas is not compaitble with presentation director). When we switched our X61t from Vista to W7 it felt like it speeded up by a factor of 2, and that was with an upgrade install, not a clean one.

Either approach will give you the display option you want when you hit Fn-F7.
