And if he upgrades to a Linux-Distribution he will experience a whole
new level of freedom and peace. Although I must say my X31 and Windows
XP work quite well together on external monitors, even the monstous
plasma TV of my parents is no real problem.

Upgrading to Windows 7 or Downloading to Windows XP Professional with
Presentation Director give you more options that what you now have. Costly,
but I can almost guarantee that Windows 7 will improve your life in a myriad
of ways. W7 is Faster, more stable, and once you get to know it, a much
easier set of choices all around. With VISTA you are just dealing with a
dead and buried operating system from which you will never learn any thing
additional that is useful. There is a strange simplicity with Windows
7that enables you and your Thinkpad to work together, improving as you go.

You either want to install Thinkvantage Presentation Director or upgrade to
Windows 7. In fact, even though Presentation Director is my all-time
favorite Thinkpad-specific application, do the latter (which alas is not
compaitble with presentation director). When we switched our X61t from
Vista to W7 it felt like it speeded up by a factor of 2, and that was with
an upgrade install, not a clean one.
Either approach will give you the display option you want when you hit
Fn-F7.
