That idea doesn't always make sense. Would you buy an old junker of a car for $1100 and then, when it reached the mileage for the timing belt change, take it to the dealer and pay $900 to have them change the timing belt and water pump 'the right way'?

Sure, provided I really needed certainty that the car worked. We still take a 2002 car to the dealer, despite their higher prices, because they use "official" parts and we are more confident that their repairs won't leave us stranded.

(20 years ago I bought a very beat up Alfa Spider for $3600. I *immediately* sank several hundred into it at the dealer. In part this was based on my perception of the actual value of the car, independent of what I paid for it. In fact, the fact that I got a good deal on it made me *more* willing to spend extra money on it.)

Back to Thinkpads, I tend to put genuine batteries in whichever my main TP du jour is, and aftermarket in the older ones.
