Hello,

Thanks. I do some 3D Art and use a i7-920 desktop system with 12GB of memory.
It would be neat to be able to do stuff on a laptop as well, but I got to
remember that performance has a cost. I can do stuff on the T61, but it can be
slow. Likely due to the 4GB memory limit as some of the 3D models are complex
and take up a lot of memory. Otherwise the T61 fits most of my needs.

I got a 4:3 aspect ratio T61 so I understand that the screen will be different.
I was thinking of going up to a 15 inch screen, but the T520 only has USB2. I
suppose the W520 is considered the T520s. It is too bad that the 170 watt
power supply is so big. The lack of a AC/DC combo adapter kills the deal.

Maybe I should wait until Spring when the new models are released or at least
see what Black Friday specials are about. I read that some T61 laptops support
8GB of RAM so maybe I will try that.

Make no mistake: T420S will leave any T61 in a trail of dust in any aspect of
performance. They are worlds apart.

Cheers,

Hello,

Looking into it some more I see some problems. The W520 requires a 170 watt

adapter and the choices for running off the car battery are not there. There

are also comments that the performance is throttled back on battery. I want a

laptop that will work off of car power.

It might be better to go with a T520 but I do not see any USB3 offered. The

other choice is T420s for USB3. I am wondering how much of an upgrade the T420s

is over a T61.

That's the big advantage of the Intel Core i7 -- lower power consumption =

longer battery life. They are pricey however. Watch out for the lowball prices

at the office supply stores: they include a mandatory data service subscription

via cell phone networks. "Real" price without the subscription is higher.
