That is confusing. If there is no X-folder line at all then Sandy can't
be using the extension. Perhaps he is using Hotmail's own POP service?
If so then only mails in the inbox will ever be downloaded.

Hotmail accounts set up in Thunderbird are set by default to use the
free POP/SMTP servers of Hotmail and not to use the Webmail add-on for
Hotmail. Can you please take a look at the server settings for the
Hotmail account into which you are trying to receive messages. What
is the server name you have set in the account?

My guess is that you first of all need to create a folder on the Hotmail
website. Move one or more test messages into this folder. Then in the
Hotmail extension set the option to download mails from this folder. All
being well the test messages will be downloaded into your Thunderbird
inbox. Look out for obvious catches like only downloading unread mail
when the mails are marked as read in Hotmail. When you have successfully
downloaded mails from this test folder, you should find the "X-Folder"
line in the headers.
