This answers a lot of questions. You aren't using the webmail
extensions, but Hotmail's own free POP service. There is no problem with
using this in most cases, it is what I do myself, although I did use the
webmail extension for some time before Hotmail made free POP access
available. If downloading mails from folders other than inbox, in
particular the "Junk" folder, is essential to your use of Hotmail, then
you will need to change the account settings. If, like me, you are happy
to just download from the Hotmail inbox and check from time to time that
nothing is in the "Junk" folder on the website that shouldn't be then
carry on using pop3.live.com.
"Localhost" is the correct server name if you are using the webmail
extension. Simply put, the extension reads your mail on the Hotmail site
and converts it into regular POP email format. It then puts the mails on
a virtual server running on your computer, "Localhost". Thunderbird then
downloads from Localhost just as though it was a normal Internet server

Yet again, thanks for the trouble taken to resolve my problems.
My server settings are POP3.Live.com for the 3 Hotmail accounts (and
POP3.btinternet.com for the Yahoo/BT account). From what you say that
is wrong.
Eugene emailed me directly to indicate there are at least 3 types of
hotmail account and I should have used "Add other account" available
from the bottom left tab of the Account settings box. I had used
"Create a new account" to set up. I have been playing with that
method exploiting an empty Hotmail account and ran into an issue that
when I checked Account settings it then said "local host" in server
name. I edited that to POP3 as above - but don't seem to be receiving
emails in that account. Looks as if I have taken (almost) every wrong
turning possible!
If I have to start again on Tbird, the troublesome trial of Outlook
available for a week more which makes imports easier.
