This is indeed a very good use for it... as your mainmenu doesn't interfere with the tiddelr displayArea!

So, did you actually adapt the css code provided in verticaltabs to achieve your mainmenu? That probably simplified things a lot for you. The only thing for your mainmenu is, that it never collapses... though, there really isn't a need for collapsing it. A few days ago I have been looking at this desktop thing and noticed that the mainmenu didn't quite work, it was always only a few pixels wide (for me). It would be great if all those grouping categories would only be visible if they contained any item. By all means, that's quite a neat tw-flavour. I will keep an eye on it.
