What Tobias is discussing is syntax in between filter > terms (which can be any kind of filter, not just [tag[...]]). Also not sure about the right syntax, but I guess a simple formula type syntax as you already implemented within the [tag[]] filter seems the most senstible approach. While this would surely add to the complexity to the filter andling, I think this provides a powerful framework for introducing more complex filters such as those of TW5 in TW2+... providing better core support what is now achieved using fET or, well, GetPlugin or the good old TiddlerListMacro, if not custom code in inline scripts or transclusions.
