Thanks for your input but it's not a DNS issue, logging in with ssh works flawlessly. @DRS, it's not the startup of java which is slow, it's the appearance of the password pop-up. I also use the oracle java JDK. I also tried with the javaviewer as packaged by RedHat, nml v1.2.80 (20130124), but it's the same problem and this is a recent version. I suspect it could have sth to do with the client going through my extensive certificate library while it shouldn't, as I just want a simple password authentication, but this is just my gut feeling speaking. As said before I don't quit understand the security tab at all. How do you debug this client anyway. Using "-log 9" does nothing at all although the client gently reports the parameter.
