That and the price, but having
found a UK supplier for under GBP70 I'm tempted.

Since GPS satellites are not geostationary, does it matter which bit
of the sky the unit can see? My office window faces north, which
clearly would be no good for geostationary satellites from the
northern hemisphere, but how about GPS?

Chris,

No, the region doesn't matter, just the percent sky coverage. There's no need to be high up - sitting in the middle of the garden would be fine, providing you can see a good fraction of the overhead sky. I've found that the units have good coverage even towards the horizon, although that may be influenced by the antenna radiation pattern of both the satellite and the receiver.

If, from your office window, you get a good near hemisphere of sky coverage go for it! You won't regret it!

(I don't have shares in Garmin of their suppliers).

BTW: if you can find two or three other people in the UK who are interested, it might be cheaper to import from the US. But it's more hassle, and you might have to pay extra duty etc. I asked Star Lite, but their extra charges for UK payment and shipping were about as much as the GPS 18 LVC itself!

Cheers,
David
