In the documentation I see a small diagram to connect the GPS-18 to
the RS232 port.
- The power I could get get from a USB port I guess?
- The 1PPS signal to DCD? Or DTR?
Resurrecting this thread... I got hold of one of these, and after much
mucking around, it seems to work. (it's defaulted to startup in binary
mode and no linux drivers can understand that, so you have to switch
it into NMEA using the Windows config program, then switch binary
mode off using a command from the spec sheet... the second step
doesn't seem to be documented elsewhere).
However it won't sync off it... there's a good signal coming in, and
the driver seems happy, but there's no sync.

If everything is 'okay' why doesn't it like the clock...?

Tony,
I just did something similar, and I wrote it up here:
http://www.david-taylor.myby.co.uk/ntp/FreeBSD-GPS-PPS.htm
My GPS 18 LVC powered up in the correct mode (I think), but the Windows
control program wouldn't talk to it. HyperTerminal saw the sentences
correctly, though! I wrote a small piece of software to switch it to
19200 baud, and back to 4800 baud, and it's OK now.
Let me see what my system says:
# ntpq -p
*GPS_NMEA(1) .PPS. 0 l 7 64 377 0.000 0.001
0.008
ntpq> cl
status=0000 clk_okay, last_clk_okay,
device="NMEA GPS Clock",
timecode="$GPRMC,181137,A,5554.4059,N,00312.0760,W,000.0,195.8,310106,004.7,W*70
",
poll=1719, noreply=0, badformat=0, baddata=0, fudgetime1=0.000,
stratum=0, refid=PPS, flags=4
I changed the refid to "PPS". Did you tell the driver which sentence to
use? As you can see, I used the default $GPRMC.
Cheers,
David
