Is this that easy a comparison to make? At least here in Canada my (full-time) paycheck does not break down into x hours for this, y hours for that. Nor even if there were a "teaching" component, would those duties be limited to classroom teaching. Much of my committee work is related to teaching, not to mention advising students, supervising thesis students, and the like. Some adjuncts get involved somewhat in this activities, but not nearly to the extent of regular faculty. It would also be important to make the comparison with the corresponding rank. Assistant Professors also make much less than Full Professors, ostensibly for doing the same job, and perhaps even more obviously than adjuncts. Universities here do have a strong component of seniority in the determination of salary. None of this is to deny the reality of how under-paid part-time and adjunct faculty are. But regular faculty are probably as dismayed about this abuse as the adjuncts (or almost so). Administrations often do not allow us to hire because they can get someone much cheaper, which is not good for the institution. Some Faculty Associations in Canada are addressing this by trying to represent part-time and adjunct people more strongly and reduce the abuse. And, of course, the part-time and adjunct people themselves can organize, although that has always been difficult for part-time employees.
