There are also a couple of technological solutions for
providing grade reports to students if you are in a place where they can
work for you. First, I use Blackboard as an online supplement for all my classes
so when students check their grades online they can see only their
grades along with class averages. Another thing I sometimes do is
distribute an Excel spreadsheet with all the class assignments on it with points
possible and the formulae for computing grades. I show them how to use it and
then whenever they get an assignment back, they can enter it in the spreadsheet
and they will know immediately what their grade is. I think these solutions come
close to putting the responsibility on them (as Nancy Melucci has done) and
dealing with any ethical or privacy issues surrounding grade reports. Although I
work at a private college which, evidently, doesn't have the same legal privacy
requirements as public colleges, I was educated entirely in public colleges and
I still have that mindset so I am concerned about privacy.

I don't post grades at all. Besides all the ethical problems it seems to create, I think it encourages an attitude of passive dependence on the instructor.
When students ask me to post grades, or to tell them how they are doing, I ask them to look at their quizzes, exam grades and assignments. They can answer this question without my input.
