On our periodic evaluations of their instructors, our students are asked to indicate what grade they expect to receive in the course. Virtually none of them indicate that they expect to get Ds or Fs despite the fact that at least 1/3 of receive those grades. The idea that students cannot answer this question correctly in the face of indisputable evidence suggests to me that they would be even more (self)delusional with your approach. Besides, so many of them have trouble computing a simply percentage so how could expect them to accurately weight the grades on the various tests, quizzes & assignments.
I e-mail the grades to the students using their student ID numbers. I also use the class dist. list to send them interesting articles I get from various sources. I assure that they read these by asking extra credit questions on the articles I send them. I have found this to be extremely well received by the students. They truly like getting e-mails from their prof. BTW, I also tell them that if they don't want their grade posted with their student ID# that they can give me another number to use.
