I respect the various techniques that people are using for their teaching situations. However, I can't help but feel that distributing lecture notes and Powerpoint slides helps turn the course into a passive recepient exercise like watching television. I believe that students should learn what's important without detailed prof provided cues. Note taking is important as some have said.
Personally, I don't distribute PP because some of the material is copyrighted. I attach the learning objectives for each chapter to the syllabus and they serve as the quiz questions in advance. We have a quiz on the first day that we start a new chapter on the new material before the lecture. Most do fine, and it eliminates the test crammers who don't do assignments. Students can learn to learn on their own if the situation is structured to require it.
