Without providing many details (they would read the same as Annette's
note), I am just glad to see that our University is not the only one
being run in this fashion. It doesn't make it any more stupid or
frustrating, but it makes me feel less alone. Thanks, Annette,

Marte

Each year we have to fill out a 'brag' sheet for merit pay. It is the
stupidest waste of time because almost no differences in pay come from
merit
pay; we get mostly equity increases so new hires don't leapfrog us
'old-
timers'. I almost choked to find out that a fresh PhD hired for a job
at our
institution this year will get $52,000; I was at USD for about 12 years
(jsut
about 2 years ago) before I made that much and now that I have been
there 14
years I make just a very little over that!

So the whole merit pay thing has become such a farce that now I just
print out
the same letter and attach my updated vita. I can't believe I used to
give up
good, precious time, to make it correct and also impressive! Anything
to get a
few extra bucks a month!

It does lead to the nick pickiest items being included and it does lead
to
playing a game--the better player wins!
