Gary- here at Drew (~1600 undergraduates, ~50 Psych. majors/year), a portion of the Intro to Psych. grade is based on research participation (typically 3 credit hours of participation). They may elect to read and answer questions on research articles if they do not want to participate in research. If they don't complete the requirement their final grade is lowered a partial letter grade. Some upper level courses also give extra credit for participation.

I'm old too!) But as to the real question, it is my understanding that there is a course requirement at many places but there, ethically anyway, is or should be an option to fulfill that requirement in other ways (oten a term paper so guess which they choose!). I find it difficult to process that a program could still consider it ethical to flunk or hold grades up for a student for an "optional" and voluntary process as is stipulated by the ethics of the APA. Also, wouldn't this just constitute part of a students grade? So if they get an F I would assume it was due to test scores, attendance/participation, and other factors. But as we are a small (very!) school I may be living in a (fools?) paradise; so the best answers will likely come from those at larger institutions. Best.
