The ethical requirement is that students are not coerced to participate in research. Participant pools therefore have an alternative assignment usually focused on some other aspect of "learning about research" such as reading a research article.

I'm not sure why you consider "lean about research" (either via participation in studies or by reading an article, for example) different from all the other things we require of students. If it is clearly outlined in the syllabus, this requirement is just like exams, projects, participation, etc. If you turn in 3 out of 4 papers, you get a lower grade. If you participate in 3 of the 4 required hours of "learning about research" you also get a lower grade.

Gary- Participation as participants is preferred now, of course. :) (Gary- I understand as I still correct myself all the time in class. I'm old too!) But as to the real question, it is my understanding that there is a course requirement at many places but there, ethically anyway, is or should be an option to fulfill that requirement in other ways (oten a term paper so guess which they choose!). I find it difficult to process that a program could still consider it ethical to flunk or hold grades up for a student for an "optional" and voluntary process as is stipulated by the ethics of the APA. Also, wouldn't this just constitute part of a students grade? So if they get an F I would assume it was due to test scores, attendance/participation, and other factors. But as we are a small (very!) school I may be living in a (fools?) paradise; so the best answers will likely come from those at larger institutions. Best. Tim

Participation as subjects.  I understand some places give students Is or Fs if they do not fulfil this as a requirement of the class?  Gary ---
