Well, Louis, given that you have patterned the rhetorical questions you put
to the group on Mother Theresa's admonitions (as you quoted earlier), I must
assume that you see commonality between her and yourself. This might be
interpreted by some as vindicating the complaints some people on this list
have had about your posts, but perhaps that's just a cheap shot.
In any case, you seem to be implying that education has deteriorated only
because the educators themselves have abdicated their responsibility.
That's a very superficial reading. The basis of deterioration in education
is social and economic, and students have abdicated responsibility for their
own education every bit as much as educators have abdicated theirs to
educate--and for much the same reasons.
Students also have responsibilities. Teaching college students is not the
same as teaching kindergarten students, or rather, it shouldn't be.

So, Paul, you just accept the very issues I have been talking about for
years? To
paraphrase Edmund Burke, it declines because good people remain silent. I
guess that's
the difference between us. I don't accept it and won't remain silent.
Maybe that's why
some are irritated with me. Don't know. What I do know is that I'm a
"There is the
teaching" guy and I don't accept as I once did "then there is teaching."
If in your
opinion that be self-delusional, "egregiously inappropriate," so be it. I
for one just
won't go quietly into the educational good night.
Make it a good day.
