When I first started out in this business(more than 30 years ago), I had a
position within a very large psychology faculty in Canada. There was a faculty
member there who would write memos to us all about good teaching that were not
unlike those under current discussion. He saw the classroom as a family. He was
also widely disliked within the faculty. In my junior status, I took his
missives to be somewhat instructive and I asked others why they seemed to
dislike his communications. One response that I still remember was this. How
would you feel if you belonged to a group of concerned parents but one of your
members deigned to tell you how you should be a parent (This was before we used
"parent" as a verb)?

This tips group is a collection of people who only belong to the group because
they care about teaching. Being challenged about our sensitivity to the cares
of our students is equivalent to asking a group of concerned parents whether or
not they want their children to thrive.
