A quick search of the internet shows that there are several books that
allege to be historical research and to provide public records in support
of the contention that African-Americans served in the Confederate army.
A couple of these books are published by Pelican Press and one author
promoting this theseis is Charles Kelly Barrow; his bio is available here:
http://pelicanpub.com/products.asp?cat=48
And some of his books are available on Amazon; for example:
http://www.amazon.com/Southerners-Confederate-Armies-Charles-Barrow/dp/0966245415
And the book on Amazon is ablso available on books.google.com; see:

I have no idea as to the validity of this historical research (perhaps one
of the historically inclined Tipsters can look into this?) and don't make
any claims for it. As one of the reviewers on Amazon said, even if there
were Black Confederate soldier (estimated to be about a thousand), it
does not mean that a majority of the African-Americans, slave or free, in
the south supported the confederate cause (however that was itnerpreted).
