Those who have worked in a medical environment know that only MDs
are "real" doctors. Ph.D.s don't count. However, most MDs would like
to own a person with a Ph.D.

>LOL. (now listed in the OED) (I wonder if ROFL is in there?)

ROFL, no. However, there are two entries for LOL in the OED:

|1. LOL, n.
|...An elderly woman....
|Etymology: Initialism < the initial letters of little old lady.

As represented in these examples:

|1960 H. Caen Only in San Francisco xi. 64 A traffic officer bellowed
|at an LOL who didn't seem to know which way to turn her car, ‘Use your
|noodle, lady, use your noodle!’
|
|1974 Saturday Rev. 13 July 28/3 How do you know my name?! accuses
|the L.O.L.
|
|1980 A. Maupin More Tales of City (1998) 91 A Luxor cab deposited
|a passenger on the sidewalk. An LOL. And she was headed for the door
|of the Superman Building.
|
|1994 San Francisco Chron. (Nexis) 7 Sept. (Food section) 8 It was a
|time when LOLs stopped with their blued hair, white gloves and proper
|handbags for sustenance while shopping.
|
|2006 T. Cutler 211 Things Bright Boy can Do i. 25 LOLs are never in a
|hurry. Furthermore, every 30 seconds extra an LOL spends chatting to the
|checkout girl about Werther's Originals must be multiplied by the number of
|people behind her.

|2. LOL, int. and n.
|...Originally and chiefly in the language of electronic communications: ‘ha
ha!’;
|used to draw attention to a joke or humorous statement, or to express
amusement....

So, watch who you're calling an elderly woman.
