I've been in touch with one of the people at NSF who does the
recipients of doctorates analyses and he has directed me to another area of data collection on the NSF website, the
"Survey of Doctorate Recipients". For general info about
the survey, see:
http://www.nsf.gov/statistics/srvydoctoratework/
For tables for 2013 about (un)employed scientists and
engineers, see:
http://ncsesdata.nsf.gov/doctoratework/2013/ For the employment status of doctoral scientists and engineers
divided by a number of demographic factors as well as
disciplines (Psychology is included), see:
http://ncsesdata.nsf.gov/doctoratework/2013/
Still, it does not answer the question of how many tenure-track
positions a person has before getting tenure which may be
available elsewhere.
