Okay, you're right MZ. that is what I was doing wrong. I was pressing the FF button and then the ADVANCE button which jumped to the 15 minute tick marks. I know now not to press FF first. But what does it mean to 'reboot' the Tivo. everytime I turn it completely off and on again?

The jumping in 15 minute increments is what I expect to happen if you use it while in FF/RW. The 30-second skip is when you use it in normal play mode. And remember that each time you enter the code it is a toggle.
