That's normal. The TiVo only keeps a 30-minute buffer for Live TV.
So when you turn it on, you'll see the bar with a green section going
back a maximum of 30-minutes. It could be less than that, if it
changed channels, etc.

If those 30 minutes spans an hour mark, etc, you could have a bar that
shows an hour, maybe more, total, with just 30 minutes of green in the
middle.

If you hit Record in LiveTV you have two options. One is to record in
Best, preserving the existing buffer - however far back that goes.
The other is to select a quality and record from 'now', losing anything
in the buffer. The recording will end at the end of the program as
indicated by the guide data.

The 30 minute buffer is the running buffer it keeps of Live TV. That's
what allows you to go back and rewind live TV.

Recordings scheduled ahead of time, such as Season Passes, etc, will
always start and end as indicated by the guide data and have full
bars. (Barring a few special conditions, such as a reboot during
recording, or clipping.) But recordings manually started from Live TV
can vary.

Yeah, that's normal.

That depends. If you change the channel, then the buffer is flushed.
It can't record what it doesn't have, and there is no way for the TiVo
to go back in time and record what has already aired. So if you have
changed the channel and find a show that you want to record, you can
only record from 'now'. If you've had it on the same channel for a
while, then it iwill have a buffer and you have the option of
recording the show and keeping the buffer.

Say there is a 2-hour movie airing. If you change the channel 30
minutes into the movie and decide to record it, you cannot record
those first 30 minutes, period. If you start watching the movie when
it starts, then you can record the entire thing up to 30 minutes into
the movie - because the first 30 minutes will be in the buffer and can
be saved. But ONLY if you elect to record at Best, since that's the
quality of the Live buffer. Change quality and it flushes the buffer
and starts from 'now'. If you watch it from the beginning and decide
to record it an hour into the movie - then you will lose the first 30
minutes, because the buffer is only 30 minutes long and those first 30
minutes have already been dropped.

It doesn't, that's not what it means when you see that.
