Were you watching something Live and then hit record? The TiVo only maintains a 30-minute buffer, so it can never keep more than that going back. Another thing that can happen is that if the guide data said, say, that there was an episode from 9-9:30, and then 9:30-10, and you were watching Live and hit record after 9:30, it records the current show - starting at 9:30.
