I purchased an Uninterruptible Power Supply, about 350 VA I think. It has 8 plugs, 4 are powered from the battery backup, and 4 are not. I have the Tivo plugged into the battery side so that those 20 second power outages don't bother it at all, and you don't miss any of your show while it reboots. The larger draw devices like the TV are plugged into the other side, reducing demand on the battery when power is lost, which keeps battery life to it's maximum, which may only be a few minutes. Don't expect to be watching TV for hours during a power outage. Also good to plug the base to your cordless phone, that way it continues to work during a power outage, at least for a few minutes.
As for surge protection, can't help you much, I just try to buy the larger joule ratings, and ones with a plug configuration that fits my needs best, like for those power packs on the end of the cords for many devices now.
