I'm not so sure about it being "hot", Jason. I searched a little this
weekend on Google and I couldn't find ANYTHING for Postfix, Exim, QMail,
or any other MTA.

What keywords are you searching for? I've been looking for things like
"SMTP probe", "reverse SMTP lookup", etc...

Also, I checked the qmail website. Nothing. Doesn't look like anyone has
made a patch for this yet. Not even qpsmtpd (perl SMTP daemon for qmail)
has it, and qpsmtpd is focused solely on spam prevention!

Furthermore, on Friday or Thursday I switched my boss's "-spambounce"
alias to point to one of my email accounts. Check this out:

He received 119 spam bounces over the weekend. Each is unique and
fatal.

But here's the really interesting part: Only ONE was from a remote host.
118 spam bounces came from cvsup.wingnet.net: our qmail server.

This basically means that if I did indeed want to drop bounces for
pending emails - I could. I have complete control over my own server,
so I can make sure that ONLY fatal bounces cause a pending email to be
dropped. Autoresponders will never come from MAILER-DAEMON at my local
qmail server.

At this point, I'm just wondering which would be easier to implement:

1.) TMDA pending email auto dropping from local qmail server fatal bounce
2.) qmail reverse SMTP "RCPT TO:" probe for envelope sender and/or FROM
    header on remote host.

And also, since I'm having such trouble finding any information on
previous attempts to implement a reverse SMTP probe, I'm wondering if
there is good reason NOT to do such a thing (In which case a TMDA
solution would be required).

I guess I just need to bite the bullet and go fish on the qmail mailing
lists and try to dredge up some useful opinions on the matter.
