You can see all programs that add overlay icons in the registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers
You can read about the details at
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc144123.aspx
Will a search for "tortoise" give no hits in your registry? I would expect
at least TortoiseOverlays to show up.
TortoiseHg 0.5 introduced TortoiseOverlays, a small component shared between
tortoises (svn, cvs, hg)
You should be able to see it on your Add/Remove Programs list in the control
panel.
If you uninstall it that should remove the overlays from your desktop.
In the process of installing 0.5 on top of pre 0.5 your registry was left in
an inconsistent state, were some parts of it tried to access pre 0.5 code
for overlays, which are no longer there.
This is a known bug in the 0.5 installer. It should check for old versions
and uninstall them before proceeding.
To fix the problem you should uninstall 0.5, install your old THG, uninstall
it again.
This is what you have already done, if I understand your mail correctly.
Now uninstall TortoiseOverlays as well. This should remove the overlays from
your desktop. I assume you don't have TSVN or TCVS installed.
If this works as expected, you can try to install THG 0.5 again.
If not, please list the subkeys of your ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers registry
key.
Regards,
Peer
