It can be +jitter, +EMI/RFI, +power fluctuations, +timing variances, it can be Alsa, rt-kernel settings, scheduling and priorities, asf. It can even be a problem within the applications.
Higher load usually causes trouble, especially if your audio chain sits very close to your processor. I'd be more then happy if it wouldn't be the case on the Touch. My system: I am running SPDIF into a Twisted Pear Buffalo DAC with ZAPfilter into Tripath 2021B amp feeding Bastanis Apollo speakers. Since you read about my Linux background, you might guess that I applied your mentioned tweaks already. ;) THX anyhow.
