I think you're right.  For a standalone player, using Squeezebox Server
probably doesn't make a whole lot of sense.  But it's established
software - that's how it's always worked, and you go with what you
know.

Probably the biggest problem with the Touch is that someone got a over
ambitious with it.  First, it tries to be and do too many different
things.  The larger miscalculation, though, was thinking that the
hardware would be able to reliably run both the server and player.  A
Touch II, with more memory and more CPU power would work fine.  If the
Squeezebox line is kept alive I'd expect to see such a device fairly
soon, possibly also fixing some of the other shortcomings that might
not have been feasible several years ago when the Touch was designed,
such as having a larger screen.
