I agree with Phil: this is all very laudable and I respect that at
least you go out of your way to review equipment in a manner similar to
what most buyers would normally encounter. That being said it does not
change the fact that human nature makes us mere morals susceptible to
feeling just a little special when we are part of very exclusive club
and the club of the high end audio reviewer is a very exclusive one
indeed. Paling around with the heads of various high end audio
equipment companies and even having them come to one's home to
personally assist in the set up of their equipment will have some
outcome on the review regardless of the writers and editors insisting
otherwise.

The fact that computer based digital audio has the potential to bring
non high end audio manufacturers into the game does cloud the issue
even further since these manufacturers have no pedigree and history
with the reviewers and the readership. So all that we, the readers of
Stereophile, ask is that these manufacturers be given a fair shake and
that when their equipment performs at a high level, regardless of
price, the lack of pedigree and history does not work against them.

As I've written on the Stereophile forum the Touch needs to be compared
not only to other networked music players but to high end CD players and
CD transports for the real nature of its giant killing and game changing
potential to be fully understood.
