Are you using a Squeezebox Server on your network? Sounds like a) the 'When off' screensaver is set to 'Screen off' b) your Touch is considered to be tuned 'off' by your server So when the Touch connects to the server, it immediately goes into the off screensaver and you get a blank screen. If you turn the Touch 'on' the server should remember this and the next time you reboot the Touch or power it up then it should come back up in the 'When stopped' screensaver.
