I did do a full reset (after which I had to re-enter WiFi and local
server logon details), and this appears to have restored the unit to
normal operation.

Is this (full reset) what we're normally expected to do  when upgrading
firmware, or is this a deficiency? The way the unit itself works
suggests it isn't the normal procedure, and I've never found it
necessary to do this before.
