I'm glad it worked for you, but I hardly think telling people to
reinstall their OS is a viable fix for the average user.

If old programs and registry dead ends are causing such issues I'd
suggest a good registry & temp & garbage file cleaner from several free
sources.
CCleaner from http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner
Win Utilities from http://www.ylcomputing.com/content/view/327/135/
Advanced System Care from
http://www.iobit.com/advancedsystemcareper.html

My six year old desk top on XP is online 24/7 and runs as good as the
day I bought it (actually, better after cleaning out the crap that
comes with new computers).
All I do is run one of the above programs every six months or so and
I've never had a problem.

For a friends computer I once reinstalled XP due to a crippling virus
infection, and it took hours of installing XP and SP1/2/3 and all the
updates.
I'd never want to go through that again. ;)
