So by DAC side you mean both the internal and some arbirary external DAC , as you say it opens up a plethora of different possibilities depending on how the DAC is designed . Hopefully most sane DAC's can take signals that is the full word length for a couple of consecutive samples (loudness war digital clipping mastering ) . If read this correctly the analog filter in the dac could reconstruct this at a higher level than usual and it better have some headroom to cope with the result (or worse the digital filter implementation does not correct for this ). Do you have a DAC that exhibits this ?
