thanks for (some of) the responses. i suppose I knew where this might go when i posted it. The second hand m-dac turned out to be a non-starter because it was being passed off as mint, event though the casing was damaged (!). so what i am going to do is audition a m-dac plus at home and see if i can tell the difference (although i know i have to watch out for expectation bias or somehow do a blind listening test on my own.) £800 is certainly more than i think i should be spending and i dont believe that i am going to notice a difference "worth" £800 (another highly subjective comment there). however i shall open my ears and see.
