I have come to this late but experience tells me this is a common
problem with older Linux PCs (which the Touch is) and USB storage
generally.

I have used USB devices as backups on a number of Linux machines and
after a period of extended use the USB drive is suddenly no longer
recognised. A full system reboot is the only fix. Removing and
re-inserting has no effect.

I can't recall exactly what the issue was but deep in my memory is a
feeling that it was something to do with the Kernel's HAL (Hardware
Abstraction Layer). It was one of the reasons that we moved servers to
rsync based backup to SAN/NAS storage on the LAN.

More modern hardware / software does not seem to have the same issue.
