I'm not sure if that's sufficient. It's still called "search" and its
name doesn't indicate that it sometimes doesn't return a list of
search results. In the end, it allows for searching and people will
use it like that. The problem is that you're overloading a button with
two functions without making it obvious how to choose which function
you want. Quickjump should be a quickly accessible (no unnecessary
switching between keyboard and mouse) and explicit (instead of
implicit, as it is now) function that behaves the same on every Trac
instance (i.e.: no preferences for turning it on/off).
The ":"-prefix solution would be like that and for those who use that
function it doesn't change much because currently you have to learn
"!" and with that change you'd only need to know ":".
The two-button solution ("Search", "Go") is OK,too, but it's slightly
less efficient because it requires switching to the mouse or at least
pressing TAB to get to the "Go" button (which isn't very obvious).
Since you said that many of you use quickjump much more often than
search I think it's better to have a solution that uses the keyboard,
only.
With JavaScript we could add a pop-up that allows for selecting
quickjump when entering something into the search box.
