I should do a better writeup and diagram of the mod I did, but the album is at:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/tracker2/photos/album/1743631459/pic/list
basically, the middle two connections on the rear jack are not passed through
the standard "mount" I opened the mount, and tied the usb+ and usb- lines
across the circuit board as detailed in the image DSCF0840.
on the inside of the nuvi, those lines (I used red and black) tie to the side
usb connections usb+ and usb- points, on my board they were test points marked
USBDP and USBDM (guessing its for USB Data Plus and Minus).
I added a microswitch to the bottom of the nuvi where the mount lip grabs it,
so when in the mount the switch is closed, which puts a 8.2K (I believe) in
series using the yellow and white wires in my picture between the shell
(ground) and the USBID test point which makes it think the data cable is
plugged in the side. I also used a portion of black electrical tape to cover
the middle two connection pads on the nuvi board where the rear connections
would have made contact to keep it from going insane. The other mod needed is
to discect the "blob" in the data cable and tie the red wire across to power
the nuvi up as well.

It works perfectly EXCEPT if you try to plug the modified data cable into the
side port alone. It seems that the nuvi getting 5V in via the side plug
disables its data mode, as it would normally send power out to the serial
converter to power it.

"One of these days when I get a chance" (shh James, I know I'm beginning to
sound like someone else) I'll get around to finishing up that writeup lol, but
I think i've detailed it here a few times enough to make it understandable.
