I use the side connector on the Nuvi-350 with the only modification being that 
I cut open the cord and jumped the red wire around the "bump" in the cord. 

It powers up the Nuvi fine that way - but don't get the serial fmi input unless 
I then unplug and plug the nine pin serial from the OT2M.
After that I will see the Nuvi display the FMI lock. It is a minor hassle but 
since the OT2M is accessible in my car I have just done that instead of 
figuring out why that works. I have thought about experimenting to see if 
breaking a certain wire with a switch would do the same thing but haven't tried 
it yet.
