The human body has capacitance to earth and therefore looks like a big
current sink to a step waveform, which is what an ESD event resembles.
If a discharge occurs to the unit under test, it will become an
element, having inductance and resistance, in the series path between
the discharge source and the human body.

Obviously, the problem is that it will be difficult to find a
volunteer willing to hold the unit under test while someone else zaps
it with an ESD gun. I'd call the people at KeyTek. They did a lot of
the characterization work on ESD and contributed significantly to the
IEEE ESD testing standard. Warren Boxleitner ("Electrostatic
Discharge and Electronic Equipment", IEEE press, 1989) is an authority
on the subject: He is no longer at KeyTek; look in the IEEE member
     index for his present address.

Hello Everyone!

Has anyone out there had any experience with handheld products being tested for
ESD immunity? We have a product for testing that can only be operated while
being held by the operator and its only used for a few seconds at a time. IEC
801-2/IEC 1000-4-2 does not seem to address this situation. Is ESD testing
required? I can't see how the product would be hit be ESD as its only operated
while being held in someones hand.

Any reply would be appreciated.
