Look very carefully at Windows Mobile devices before you dive in.
Depending on your impatience for keystrokes you may find it less
productive than a Palm device. Cingular sells the 680 which is PalmOS
and according the store rep will be coming out with a 750 equivalent
with PalmOS sometime this year. Given that you have to get something
now I can see the allure of the 8525 - quite an impressive device, but
read the reviews, which cover a great deal, and heed my warning: create
a calendar event and save it. Make sure it's longer than just a few
characters. Then go through the steps you have to go through to change
something at the end of that appointment text and see if you can stand
it. Every builtin field has these same editing characteristics. As
attractive as WinMob devices are to me, and other comments
notwithstanding, I could not stand that.

There are 3rd party apps that help reduce the number of steps to get
stuff done in Windows Mobile. There are no 3rd party apps I'm aware of
that can mitigate the reported crashing and locking up, which,
anecdotally, seem to be more common than with the (aging) PalmOS. Not
having had a Windows Mobile device since the days of PPC's, I can't
speak to the crashing and locking, but the comments seem to center on
these things happening when using the phone - the least convenient time
for such things. To be fair, most of my locking and resetting problems
with PalmOS happen around the phone app, but it's like once or twice a
year with the 700p; it was once or twice a month with the 650. I've
seen reports of more frequent problems with the 700w.

Also - and this is something I'd not thought to mention in the past -
keep in mind that none of your PalmOS apps from the 650 will run on the
8525 or the 750. I don't often think to mention this, but my sister is
in the market for a replacement for her 600 and doesn't know the
difference between PalmOS and WinMob. She was in the Cingular store
today and the guy didn't even mention that difference to her. She was
getting set to buy a 750 until I mentioned that HandyShopper wouldn't
run on it. Even with available equivalent apps to Handy Shopper (I
helped design one) on Windows Mobile, that was a showstopper for her
that she wouldn't have encountered until she tried to install it!!

If you sync with Outlook, by the way, all you have to do is sync with
the new conduits and the new device to get your data back, since it's
all still in Outlook. This is true regardless of which way you go:
Hotsync or Activesync. If you're switching to a Windows Mobile device,
none of the other stuff (applications and preferences mostly) that are
in the Backup folder in your username folder are relevant anyway.

Cheers,

Don

Actually I spent about 45 minutes in the Cingular store playing with the
750
and the Cingular 8525.Probably going to go with the 8525.

I use the conduits to sync with Outlook.

Thanks,

Jim
