Direct push is a function of Versamail (on the Treo) and Microsoft Exchange (for email).
It does work on the 680: http://www.palminfocenter.com/news/9207/direct-push-microsoft-exchange-u pdate-for-palm-os/ I use it on the 700p and it works very well! I think for email GPRS/EDGE speed would be fine, although I do like the EVDO speed I get from Verizon.
