Hey Sam,
 
I know all of that, but when we tested it out by someone IM'ing me with 
Trillian, I didn't get a message.  When the same IM was sent via AIM, it 
worked.  Go figure...

IM forwarding isn't a feature of the IM client, but rather at the server
side.

You can go to AOL.com, sign in with your IM screen name, and set up
mobile forwarding there.

Once mobile forwarding is in place, AOL will forward messages to your
SMS address only when your regular client is offline (or away), so you
don't get messages to your mobile when you're sitting at your desk.
