Deleting the database never cured it for me. Even a database with a single message in it would sometimes hang when I attempted to view that message. All messages are very simple messages that are sent to me from my answering service, letting me know who just left a message, etc. So deleting the database failed to resolve it, and so did keeping the number of messages to a minimum. I also tried turning off threading. That didn't help. Agendus Mail 5.3 never has any of these problems over here on my Verizon 700p.
