I played with a friend's Pearl last week at lunch and I came away thinking it was a quite competent device out of the box. But, if you want to do anything interesting beyond what RIM has already programmed it to do, you're unlikely to get much satisfacition. There's just not nearly as many 3rd party apps out there for these devices. More all the time, but you don't have half a dozen launcher alternatives, half a dozen media players, two dozen photo viewers, several web browser alternatives, etc. like you do with a Treo.
To summarize, I think that your typical user would be satisfied by the Pearl, but power users would find it limiting.
