Larry, I carry a Treo 680 (mine) and a Blackberry 8800 (work's) daily
so I know both platforms well. Feel free to ping me off-list with
more detailed questions but in general it depends what you want to do
with the device. It definitely sounds like your 680 is a lemon. I'm
on my second 680 (the first went into a reboot loop due to a stuck
key) and the new one is more stable than the first. Mine resets
spontaneously 2-3 times a month, if that, and I have a lot of 3rd
party apps installed. I've connected it with several BT headsets
(Motorola, Jawbone, Jabra) without issue. It's vastly better than my
650 that way. The most annoying thing about it is the 5-30 second
hangs when it goes into or out of coverage. I bought the stock-size,
added-capacity battery recently and wish I'd done so sooner. I highly
recommend it.
My BB is used primarily for work but I have a number of 3rd party apps
on it too. It is more stable than the Treo, though it has reset
itself about once a month and now locks up when I try to run a
particular app (bbweather) after upgrading the OS. So even the mighty
BB has its bugs. However it has a GPS that I've found very useful
since I travel at least once a week.
The things I like best about the Treo are the touch screen, the
ability to carry an 8GB SD card and the fact that A2DP works, though
it needs a $15 piece of 3rd party software. I use my Treo instead of
an iPod for music, video, TV shows, etc and it's great that way. But
since you don't use it for those purposes it probably doesn't much matter.
Yeah, the Yahoo BB lists are pretty quiet and the owners are not the
passionate bunch that Treo owners are. As a long-time Palm user I
hated to hear the announcement last week that the next really new Treo
won't be out until 2009. I'm quite certain by then I'll have moved to
something else though I refuse to carry WinCE on my hip so that cuts
down on my choices. I hope that the rumors about the next iPhone are
true: wimax and/or HSDPA. If so I'll likely be saying goodbye to my
old friend PalmOS for ever. I'm sure I'm not alone there so Palm's
year+ delay could well mean their undoing.
I hope this helps.
