The way it works with my dedicated portable player is that I load Winamp, my currently preferred desktop music player/manager, plug in the portable, and when Winamp finishes loading it, click the "Sync" button. Winamp then updates the music on the player by adding to it anything I added to the desktop library and removing from it anything that I have removed from the desktop library.
